6 Ways to Save on Insurance in 2016

Alex Bravos Insurance Services understands insuring ourselves and our families is necessary and can be costly. We’ve put together some ways to maximize your coverage while minimizing your insurance coverage costs this year.

  • Shop around– When choosing your health insurance plan, it is tempting to choose the one with the lowest monthly premium with the rise of affordable health insurance options, but each family’s healthcare needs are unique; there is no one-size-fits-all plan. Consider the average number of doctor visits, dental cleanings, routine prescriptions, and any specific treatments or therapies that are needed on a regular basis when shopping for your healthcare plan, then find the coverage that will fit your needs best.

  • Have a fall-back plan– If you recently changed jobs and your new employer’s healthcare plan has not taken effect yet, ask whether you can extend your policy from your previous employer in the interim. If this is not possible, buy a short-term plan so you are never without coverage.

  • Get regular checkups– You know the saying, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Most well-child checkups and routine physical exams are either available at a low cost or entirely covered by your insurance provider. Preventive care is essential to helping your doctor detect health problems early, and routine vaccines will lower your children’s risk of serious and preventable illnesses.

  • Use your FSA– Many employers offer a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), which is a tax-sheltered account that can be used to pay for out-of-pocket medical expenses. By making small, regular contributions (10% of your paycheck per month or less), you have a safety net to help you pay for unforeseen medical bills. Since the money is deducted pre-tax, the dent in your paycheck will barely be visible.

  • Don’t be afraid to argue– When an insurance company refuses to pay for a service you think should be covered, it is your right to appeal the decision. Providing documentation, doctors’ recommendation letters and other forms of evidence that a treatment or procedure is necessary to your health can assist you in getting a decision overturned by the insurance company and saving you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in medical bills.

  • Look for special services– Many health insurance companies offer special programs, discounts or services for patients with chronic illnesses such as asthma as well as prenatal, pediatric and geriatric preventative care services. Some health plans even offer discounts on wellness-related services such as gym memberships, weight-loss programs and massage therapy. Be sure to ask your health plan representative if you are eligible for any special discounts or benefits.
